The “Sony WH-1000XM5 Refurbished”, there’s no doubt that this WH-1000 series has set the standard for over-ear ANC. With a completely restyled design, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Refurbished looks to be a substantial upgrade from 2020’s WH-1000XM4.

My expectations were a little higher in terms of low-end oomph, however. You wouldn’t expect these headphones to have deep, bouncy bass out of the box. With Sony’s Headphones Connect app, you can adjust your EQ using five bands, plus there is a slider for Clear Bass. You won’t quite get that movie theater-sound if you tune the last slider to +6 or more (out of a maximum of +10).
When it comes to sound quality, the Sony WH-1000XM5 refurbished’ supports Sony’s LDAC codec, but there are some limitations. The Headphones Connect app must be set to disable Bluetooth multipoint for LDAC to work.
These Sony WH-1000XM5 refurbished headphones offer outstanding audio quality and class-leading noise cancellation due to several iterations into a series known for its sound quality and ANC. The XM5 provides exceptional clarity and detail, particularly in the high and midrange frequencies, even without LDAC (more on that later).
The ANC on Sony WH-1000XM5 is excellent. Low hums, airplane cabin noise, and other common sounds are muted just as well as or better than any other headphones on the market, while more difficult sounds like background music or people talking are effectively muted. In use of a gas-powered leaf blower, the headphones are not able to completely isolate background noise, but you can hear my music perfectly at medium volume with ANC on. I find that amazing.
Furthermore, not all streaming music services offer a quality that takes advantage of LDAC’s higher max bitrate. There are a few, like Qobuz and Amazon Music, but Spotify and YouTube Music don’t. Compared to SBC or AAC, LDAC uses more battery. With my XM5, I haven’t used LDAC much as I prefer Spotify, so I haven’t heard much difference between different codecs.

It is important to note that the call quality is excellent. When listening to recordings taken with the WH-1000XM5, the background noise is muted and I can hear my own voice clearly. So far, I have not received any complaints about my voice sounding garbled or distant when using the headphones for video meetings and phone calls.
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones are another outstanding example of its long-running ANC series. If you’re looking for high-end noise-canceling headphones that feature tight sound and ANC that’s industry leading, then this is a fantastic pick.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Refurbished – Battery Life
According to Sony, it takes three and a half hours to charge the headphones from empty to full, and that three minutes of charging translates into three hours of listening. Sony does not provide much detail on that last claim, only noting that the headphones require “an optional USB-PD compatible AC adapter.” However, a standard 18-watt USB-C cable charges the headphones reasonably quickly.
Battery life for the Sony WH-1000XM5 edition is 30 hours between charges when ANC is turned on and LDAC is turned off. My understanding is that this is accurate. A 30-hour runtime is hard to complain about, although some headphones last longer. There is no plane ride on Earth that can drain the XM5’s battery faster than the longest direct flight of 19 hours.
Sony WH-1000XM5 Refurbished – Restyled DESIGN
There is a great deal of comfort with the Sony WH-1000XM5. With just under nine ounces of weight, the headphones are light and plush with a faux leather padding. There are times, however, when the headband weighs on the top of my head in a way I don’t experience with other headphones, which can be uncomfortable. There is, however, no outright pain, and changing the band is as simple as moving it. To maintain a comfortable fit, you may have to fiddle with the XM5.
Sony has made a huge shift with the WH-1000XM5. Compared to the four generations of headphones, the XM5 has a sleeker, more modern design. Compared to previous models, the headphones’ headbands and arms are thinner and rounder, and they don’t fold up for storage or travel, instead sitting flat in their cases. From an objective standpoint, the XM5 is a downgrade from the XM4. It takes up about the same amount of space as the XM4s in a bag despite its larger size.
The case has a durable-feeling fabric finish and lots of interesting angles and lines that serve little purpose beyond looking cool. Unlike previous versions, the WH-1000XM5 does not fold down. Traveling a lot and being space-conscious may make that large case a pain.
Sony WH-1000XM5 Refurbished – Features and what it says in market
This product doesn’t have a rated water resistance, which is a disappointment for the price. You wouldn’t want to wear these to the gym, but having some assurance that sweat or rain won’t ruin your $400 headphones would be nice. I hope Sony rectifies this oversight in the next version since it’s not likely to be an issue in day-to-day use.
When it comes to regular wireless headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM5 are very premium at $400. For the same $400, Bose also offers Noise-Canceling Headphones 700, which offer similar audio quality and ANC, but have a minor advantage on both fronts. XM5’s Bluetooth multipoint is also supported by the Bose 700, but the Bose 700’s battery life is less than the XM5, rated at 20 hours, and there is no support for high-quality codecs like LDAC. Despite their age, Bose headphones have been marked down more frequently (and more heavily).
Sony WH-1000XM4 is another previous-generation option to consider. You can still get them and they perform almost as well as the XM5. Moreover, they come at a $50 discount, and they are often on sale – including a recent deal at $250.
By pressing the NC/AMB button on the left ear cup, you can toggle between the ANC and transparency modes, or by touching the touch-sensitive right ear cup, if you need to hear something quickly. If you keep your hand there, your media volume will be lowered and transparency will be enabled. In-flight announcements can be heard by pulling an earcup away from your head when necessary; this feature is intuitive, works well, and is much less uncomfortable than pulling an earcup away from your head.
Why You Should buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 Refurbished ANC Headphones
It’s time to upgrade your ANC headphones and you’ve got $400 to burn. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 is a great choice if cost isn’t a concern when shopping for ANC headphones. The new design balances modern and trendy well, and they sound great.
Their ANC is second to none. For most people, these headphones are an easy “yes” even though bass fanatics may find the headphones a little lacking in low-end response, and some travelers may disagree with the headphones’ lack of folding capabilities.
