Samsung 990 Pro On PS5: Fast Gaming On PS5 NVMe SSD 990Pro
It has been no secret for years that Samsung has led the way when it comes to flash storage and memory, and the company’s internal SSDs have been a popular choice when it comes to building custom computers (or upgrading older ones). A faster SSD is now available from Samsung (the Samsung 990 Pro), which is even faster than the 980 Pro.
Whether it is a 3D rendering, 4K video editing, data analysis, or “graphically demanding games,” the Samsung 990 Pro (not an Evo-branded drive) is designed to fulfill the requirements of tasks that require constant read and write access to disk at high speeds, such as 3D rendering, 4K video editing, data analysis, and similar tasks.
There isn’t any mention in Samsung’s announcement if the device will work with the PlayStation 5 (the PS5 can accept third-party SSDs if they are fast enough), but the old Samsung 980 Pro worked with the PS5, so that’s a safe bet.

According to Samsung, the Samsung 990 Pro drive has a sequential read and write speed (meaning the data is read and written sequentially in the same area of the drive) of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. This is a difference of up to 55% in speed as compared to the 980 Pro, which was released in 2020.
There is also a 50% increase in power efficiency with this drive compared to the 980 Pro. If you are interested in purchasing a gaming PC from Samsung, you can either buy the drive with a heatsink or without it. The latter option comes with RGB lights, because what kind of gaming PC would have RGB everywhere if it wasn’t a gaming PC?
Despite Samsung’s new drive, there is still much of competition when it comes to NVMe SSDs. With sequential read speeds up to 7,100 MB/s, Corsair’s MP600 PRO LPX SSD was released earlier this year. Real-world tests, however, showed that the drive exceeded that.
In October 2022, Samsung will release the Samsung 990 Pro and 990 Pro with Heatsink for $179 for the 1 TB model and $309 for the 2 TB model. A version with 4 TB is also planned for 2023 by Samsung. You can sign up for pre-order notifications when it goes live, but pre-orders are not available yet.

It is still better to have a SATA-based or cheaper NVMe drive for most PCs, especially since high-end drives offer diminishing returns for most computer tasks – the difference between booting Windows on a fast NVMe SSD and a fast SATA SSD is at most a few seconds. The Samsung 990 Pro is better suited to gamers who want faster speeds (such as high-quality gaming).
