Mercedes has not yet announced the price for the EQG, but the current G-Class starts around $130,000. EQG is likely to be one of the company’s most expensive electric cars due to the disparity between combustion engine and electric cars.
This vehicle sits above the currently leading Mercedes EQS, which sells for around $105,000. In 2024, we expect to see Mercedes’ electric version of its G-Class badged as a model year 2024.

It is always difficult to tell how a future vehicle will be based on a concept. Mercedes’ Concept EQG shown back in 2021 was a static representation of what an electric G-Class might look like in the future. As of right now, there isn’t much technical information available on the Mercedes website for the EQG, which is showcased with a strange Star Wars-themed page (opens in new tab).
A new Mercedes battery pack with high silicon content will be used in the EQG, resulting in a more compact battery pack and an increased range.
According to Mercedes, the battery’s silicon anode increases energy density by 20 to 40%. Vision EQXX is a prototype electric car that has been shown to have a capacity of 100 kWh and a range of 700 miles, doubling the range of today’s most efficient electric cars.
Because the EQG has a relatively small wheelbase, its battery pack should be smaller than the 107.8 kWh option available on the EQS. By combining new battery technology with improved energy density, the electric G-Class may have the longest range of any EV.

In the same way, the interior of the concept car looks very much like the production version of the vehicle. Cabins and dashboards are typically where concept designers run wild, with very few surviving the production process. However, we don’t believe this is true of the EQG concept, whose interior is very similar to the current G-Class, except it shows power delivery and range via EV dials.
Currently, little is known about the interior technology, but we can expect a similar infotainment system to those found in other Mercedes EQ models. Mercedes will offer a completely different soundscape for its first dedicated electric off-roader, so it will be interesting to see if it recreates the current G-Class’ rumble with artificial sounds.

The production version of the EQG will probably stay within the scope of the concept version, for now. A boxy, retro design with a near-vertical windshield, flat sides, and blunt rear end has already made the current G-Class one of the most recognizable cars in the automotive world.
Even if the shape is less efficient and the range is slightly lower due to the utilitarian design, we think Mercedes will retain the design.
The 2021 concept includes a covered grille with LED lights, a full-width light bar on the roof, and accent lighting strips along the sides, although these features are unlikely to appear in production due to roadgoing vehicle regulations. Likewise, the light strip around the lockable box on the rear mimics the spare wheel cover on old G-Wagens.

In 4.4 seconds, the current AMG version of the G-Class reaches 60 mph, making it one of the fastest SUVs on the market. The EQG could be even faster if four electric motors were used for each wheel instead of the V8 engine.
It is expected that the battery alone will weigh around 1,100 pounds, making the car a heavy beast. Even so, a sub-four-second time from 0-60 mph wouldn’t be unreasonable for the hottest version of EQG.
Mercedes plans to equip the EQG with four motors, giving each corner of the car individual control over power, torque, and braking force. Off-roading will likely be its strong suit. The vehicle offers unique on-road and off-road driving characteristics thanks to its four electric motors located close to the wheels.
A shiftable 2-speed gearbox allows the Concept EQG to meet the high-G-specific off-road requirements with confidence thanks to its off-road reduction.”

From a design standpoint, we anticipate the production version of the EQG to look similar to the 2021 concept. The G-Class is Mercedes’ design icon, so it is unlikely the company will make any changes to its appearance.
