FCI scam News this year 2023! The operation code “Kanak” was launched to identify corrupt FCI officials, mill owners, grain merchants, middlemen and warehouse operators suspected of participating in misconduct.
Following the registration of a case against 74 individuals, including 34 serving and three retired Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials and 20 rice mills, the Central Bureau of Investigation searched more than 50 locations in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi on Wednesday, in a covert operation that was over six months old. It has been alleged that massive corruption has taken place in the procurement of food grains.
From technical assistants and managers to an executive director in the Delhi office named Sudeep Singh, the accused officials range from technical assistants and managers to an executive director. According to a CBI official, searches were conducted in Punjab’s Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Ropar, Sangrur and Chandigarh, Haryana’s Ambala and Delhi’s Singh’s residence.
Rajiv Kumar Mishra, the deputy general manager of the FCI, was also arrested by the CBI for allegedly receiving $50,000 from Ravinder Singh Khera, the owner of a rice and agricultural products company.

New Delhi headquarters of the Food Corporation of India on January 11, 2023. Following the arrest of a DGM-ranked officer, the CBI conducted searches at 50 locations in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi in connection with alleged corruption at the Food Corporation of India.
So far, the agency has seized $80 lakh in cash and jewellery during the searches, including the premises of the accused executive director, the manager (laboratory) Satish Verma, the technical assistant Nishant Barria, and the assistant Manpreet Singh, along with Navneet Kaur and Navpreet Kaur. An employee’s residence was found to have $15 lakh in cash hidden in a washing machine.
As part of the “Kanak” operation, corrupt FCI officials, mill owners, grain merchants, middlemen and warehouse operators were identified, suspected of being part of a large network involved in committing malpractices such as supplying substandard grains and registering inflated procurement quantities. It was decided to conduct a surveillance in this regard.

FCI scam News (2023): A look at “Benami Food Supply Depots”
Several Punjab officials who operated “benami” food supply depots are also being investigated by the agency.
In the CBI investigation, it was revealed that most of the bribe money was collected by junior FCI officials and distributed upwards.
The agency earlier this month filed a chargesheet against a former deputy general manager (Region) of the FCI (Guwahati) and the proprietor of a private company for allegedly extending undue favors to the latter.
In accordance with the Food Corporation Act, the FCI is responsible for ensuring that farmers’ interests are protected, to distribute foodgrains across the country for public distribution, and to maintain adequate levels of operational and buffer stocks of foodgrains in order to ensure national food security. A total of 2,200 warehouses are operated by the company, either owned or leased. Punjab has over 600 storage units.
